A1

WELCOME TO OUR WORLD is a multidisciplinary design investigation that examines South Korea’s pervasive culture of lookism, tracing its roots from Confucian gender archetypes to the modern-day aesthetic ideal. The project critiques how socio-cultural pressures push women toward severe visual standardization and dynamic body modification.

Editorial Design & Visual Methodology:
The publication serves as both a historical record and a contemporary critique. The layout system employs rigid underlying grid structures, constrained micro-typography, and fragmented, pixelated imagery—a visual language designed to evoke the systematic surveillance and psychological confinement of societal conformity.
Historical Trajectory: Traces the evolution of female beauty standards from the Joseon Dynasty to South Korea’s contemporary status as the global capital of aesthetic surgery per capita.
Lived Experiences: Incorporates personal testimonies from Korean women, detailing the economic and social ramifications of lookism—ranging from daily self-surveillance to hiring discrimination in professional landscapes.

Tactile Installation & Materiality:
Accompanying the publication is a mixed-media wall installation constructed from shattered mirror shards, delicate chainwork, beads, and industrial wire. The piece translates the physical and psychological mechanics of surgical alteration—reflecting the cyclical pursuit of dynamic perfection through fractured self-image and systemic restraint.

B1

Hosted under HRF’s Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Disruption Initiative, the Byond Borders workshop was a specialized capacity-building program designed to empower the next generation of diaspora leaders—including young activists, artists, and representatives from Uyghur, Hong Konger, Tibetan, Chinese, Southern Mongolian, and Taiwanese communities.

The initiative addressed critical challenges surrounding transnational repression (TNR), cross-community advocacy, and collective resilience through targeted training modules:
  • Legal & Jurisdictional Strategy: Examined legal frameworks, evidence gathering, and secure reporting channels alongside experts like Laura Harth (Safeguard Defenders).
  • Digital & Physical Security: Delivered actionable training on threat assessment, personal safety protocols, and risk mitigation.
  • Artistic & Cultural Resistance: Explored how creative mediums—including music and graffiti—can preserve heritage, reclaim historical identity, and foster inter-community empathy.
  • Uyghur Youth Mobilization: Led focused digital sessions tailored to refining grassroots organizing and campaign strategy for Uyghur youth leaders.

Key Impact & Outcome:
The collaborative insights and safety strategies from this workshop directly informed the Toolkit to Counter the Chinese Communist Party’s Transnational Repression, published by HRF in August 2026 to equip targeted diaspora communities with practical tools to identify and counter TNR tactics.

The New Norm explores the stories of individuals who challenge and transcend societal expectations, capturing the transformative acts of personal liberation. By breaking away from rigid stereotypes and traditional constraints, the project treats the act of divergence itself as an artistic expression.

To visually articulate this tension between constraint and freedom, the publication pairs evocative collage artwork—combining bold compositions with subtle, tactile forms—alongside direct, emotive prose designed to resonate deeply with the viewer.

    D1

This project outlines a comprehensive visual identity system for the Brooklyn Museum, designed to articulate the institution’s progressive vision, inclusive curation, and dynamic presence within New York City’s cultural landscape.

    Brand Strategy & Context:
As one of North America’s oldest and largest art institutions, the Brooklyn Museum occupies a unique position: balancing traditional historical preservation with bold, contemporary experimentation. Known for challenging conventional museum paradigms and championing underrepresented narratives, the institution required an identity system capable of reflecting both its rich heritage and its forward-thinking ethos.

    Visual Concept & Architectural Integration:
The resulting rebrand centers on the duality of heritage and innovation, drawing direct creative inspiration from the museum’s iconic Beaux-Arts architectural framework. The logo mark and bespoke custom alphabet translate the grand arches of the physical building into structural typographic forms. This arch motif serves as a recurring visual device—symbolizing portal, access, and bridge—creating a flexible visual identity that scales seamlessly across digital platforms, exhibition collateral, and environmental touchpoints.

This project investigates the intersection of sonic rhythm, cultural identity, and type design through the creation of Ami, an original display typeface inspired by the compositions of renowned Korean musician Jung Jae-il (Parasite, Squid Game).

        Concept & Sonic Research:
Deepening research into Jung Jae-il’s broader musical repertoire, the project draws direct inspiration from his piece Who Am I—a composition characterized by its delicate synthesis of contemporary orchestration and traditional Korean instruments, including the piano, gayageum, and daegeum. The inherent tensions, expressive cadences, and dynamic contrasts of the score served as the conceptual blueprint for the typeface’s visual structure.

        Typographic System & Cultural Heritage:
Ami translates musical rhythm, fluid movement, and emotional dissonance into structural letterforms. Central to the type architecture is the circular motif, drawing from its historical significance in Korean visual culture and iconography. By balancing geometric precision with expressive gestures, the typeface creates a dialogue between Korea’s cultural heritage and contemporary typographic systems.
